What is Craniosacral Therapy?

What is it?

Just like other parts of your body, your cranium and your face are made up of several bones, with joints that can experience stresses, strains and restrictions. Because the membrane around your brain and spinal cord is attached inside the cranium, other parts of your body may react to trauma that you have received directly to your head. So, craniosacral therapy is an important part of our whole body approach.

How do we do craniosacral therapy?

We use manual therapy and release techniques, which involve putting our hands on your head to feel the general rhythm, working our way along each bone and using joint release techniques to optimise movement. If membranes around the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) need releasing, we’ll use neural manipulation techniques, working around the cranium.

Who it’s for

We may use craniosacral therapy for a number of reasons. Most commonly we use these techniques on people who have had head trauma, or a fall or bang to the head or the bum, as both can impact the cranium. Often people present with headaches and TMJ (jaw) pain, which can also increase tightness in the pelvic floor.
